A backyard birthday party tent turns your lawn into the party room. It gives guests shade in the afternoon, a dry spot if a shower rolls through, and a place to hang lights once the sun goes down. The tent is only the start, though. You also need the right size for your guest count, a spot in the yard that can hold it, and everything that goes under it.
We are Dreamers Event Rentals, a family owned tent and event rental company in Reisterstown, and we have been putting up tents around Baltimore since 2011. This guide covers the whole list for a Maryland backyard birthday, whether it is a third birthday with a dinosaur cake or a 50th with dinner under the lights. You will get tent sizes from our own specs, the rental list item by item, and one local step that is easy to miss: calling Miss Utility before a pole tent is staked.

What Size Backyard Birthday Party Tent Do You Need?
Start with your guest count, then decide how many people need a seat at the same time. A kids’ party where parents stand and chat needs less room than a 60th birthday dinner where everyone sits down.
Here is what our most common backyard sizes hold, taken straight from our tent specs:
| Tent size | Standing guests | Seated at 60 inch rounds | Seated at 8 foot tables |
|---|---|---|---|
| 20 x 20 | 40 to 60 | 32 (4 tables) | 48 (6 tables) |
| 20 x 30 | 60 to 80 | 48 (6 tables) | 72 (9 tables) |
| 20 x 40 frame | 80 to 100 | 64 (8 tables) | 96 (12 tables) |
| 30 x 30 pole | 90 to 110 | 64 (8 tables) | 96 (12 tables) |
For about 50 guests, we usually point people to a 20 x 30 or a 20 x 40. That leaves room for a food table, a gift table, and a cake table, and those three take up seating space fast, so count them before you pick a size.
Rectangle tables fit more people under the same roof, while round tables feel more like a dinner party. If you are stuck between two sizes, our guide on what size party tent you need for 50 guests walks through the layouts.

Frame or Pole: Where the Tent Can Go in Your Yard
A tent needs more yard than its roof. Because stakes and weights sit outside the edge of the tent, we generally need 5 to 10 feet of clear space around the whole thing, which is why a 20 x 20 tent will not fit in a 20 x 20 patch of grass.
The style you pick decides where it can go:
- Pole tents are held up by center poles and have to be staked into grass or dirt, so they cannot go on concrete. A 20 x 20 high peak pole tent needs about 30 x 30 feet of yard, and pole tents are also the more cost effective style.
- Frame tents stand on a metal frame with no center poles. They can go on grass with stakes, or on a driveway with concrete block weights. A 20 x 20 high peak frame tent needs about 25 x 25 feet, and a patio can work too if the space allows.
No center poles means an open floor, which helps with a long buffet or a dance floor. If your yard is tight or sloped, we can come out and measure before you book. For a deeper look at the two styles, read our pole tent vs. frame tent comparison.

The Maryland Step Before a Pole Tent Goes Up
Pole tents are anchored with long stakes, and our 20 x 20 high peak pole tent uses twelve 42 inch stakes. Before those go into the ground, the lines under your yard need to be marked. For pole tents, you must call Miss Utility to mark the lines.
Miss Utility is the service that marks underground utility lines in Maryland, and homeowners can request a locate for free. Its guidance is to contact it at least 3 full business days, and no more than 12 business days, before digging starts. You can submit a request through Miss Utility online.
That window matters, so count back from the day we install the tent, not from the day of the party. We usually deliver 1 to 3 days before an event, so ask us for your install date first, then place the request.
Permits are a separate question. Whether you need one depends on your county and the size of the tent, and the permit is often the host’s responsibility. We cover the county rules in do you need a permit to put up a tent in Maryland, and we can help point you in the right direction.
The Backyard Birthday Rental List, Item by Item
Once the tent is picked, here is the list we would build to fill it for most backyard birthdays. You can also start from our birthday party rentals page.
Tables and Chairs
Plan a seat for everyone who will eat at the same time, then add a few tables that never get chairs: food, gifts, and cake. A 6 foot rectangle table seats 6, or 8 if you put one person on each end, and it doubles as a gift or dessert table. A 60 inch round table seats 8 comfortably.
For chairs, our white poly folding chair is our most cost effective chair, and it holds up to 650 pounds, which makes it an easy pick for a casual party. Want a dressier look for a milestone dinner? Our guide on how to choose rental chairs compares the styles.
Drinks and Cleanup
A 120 quart drink cooler or a large galvanized beverage tub keeps drinks cold and keeps guests out of your kitchen. Rent a couple of trash cans too, because paper plates, cups, and wrapping paper pile up fast, and a can next to the food table keeps them off the lawn.
Lighting
If the party runs past sunset, add bistro lighting, and when you rent the lights with a tent, we install them at no additional cost.
Games
Games keep kids busy and give adults something to do between bites. We rent cornhole, giant Jenga, Kan Jam, and Spikeball, and you can see them all on our game rentals page. Giant Jenga starts as a 2.5 foot tower and can grow past 5 feet during play, and every game is best set up on open grass outside the tent so the tent stays clear for tables.

Comfort and Power
Maryland summers get humid, so a tent fan or a portable evaporative cooling unit helps on the hottest days. Sidewalls are an add-on if you want a break from wind or a low afternoon sun. If there is no outlet near the tent, we also provide generators.

For a Kids’ Birthday
Small kids need small furniture. Our kids white resin chair has a padded seat and is sized for children ages 2 to 7, and it pairs with our 6 foot kids rectangle table, which stands 21 inches tall and seats 6. You will still need regular tables and chairs for the parents.
Kids’ parties often happen in the afternoon, so shade is the tent’s biggest job. The National Weather Service notes that young children and infants are particularly vulnerable to heat-related illness, because their bodies are less able to adapt to heat than adults. Most of our tents use block-out vinyl to keep it cooler underneath, but clear top tents are the exception, so they are not the pick for a sunny afternoon party.
For a Milestone Birthday
A 40th, 50th, or 60th often looks more like a dinner party. Guests sit longer, the party runs into the evening, and somebody gives a toast. That shifts the list toward round tables for dinner, bistro lighting for after dark, and sometimes a sound system with a wireless microphone so the toasts can be heard. Dance floors are available too, if the night is headed that way.
One more thing for a seated dinner: tent installation is included, but setting out the tables and chairs is extra unless you arrange it with us. If you would rather not spend the morning of the party unfolding chairs, ask about setup when you book. We explain what is and is not included in does tent rental include setup.
Keeping a Backyard Birthday Party Tent Safe in Maryland Weather
Our tents are commercial grade vinyl and water resistant, so a passing shower is not a problem. If the forecast turns, call us right away to add sidewalls, and we will add them if they are available. Keep the rented tables and chairs out of the rain too, since wet rentals can mean water damage fees.
Thunderstorms are different. A tent is not shelter from lightning, so if there is lightning, everyone needs to leave the tent right away. The National Weather Service says it plainly: there is no safe place outside when thunderstorms are in the area. Its rule is easy to remember: When Thunder Roars, Go Indoors. Wind has a limit as well, and tents must be cleared if winds go above 38 miles per hour.
The rule every birthday host should know: no open flames of any kind are allowed under our tents. That covers the grill and the candles on the cake, so sing and blow them out just outside the tent. A fire pit needs to be at least 50 feet from the tent, because smoke and ash can ruin the vinyl.
Decorating is welcome as long as you skip tape, pins, and anything that punctures the vinyl or leaves residue on it, so plan how the balloons and banners will hang before the party starts.
Booking, Delivery, and Setup Day
We deliver within about 50 miles of Reisterstown, and further for larger events on request. We usually deliver 1 to 3 days before your event, and we give you an estimated arrival window.
Before we arrive, clear the tent area of furniture, debris, and pet waste. Our crew installs every tent, and for safety reasons we do not let hosts put the tent up themselves.
Book the tent first, since its size decides everything else on the list, and if you choose a pole tent, leave room for the Miss Utility window too. Our guide on how far in advance to book a tent rental in Maryland has the full timeline. When you are ready, get a quote and we will size the tent to your yard.
Backyard Birthday Party Tent FAQ
What size tent do I need for 50 guests?
A 20 x 30 or a 20 x 40 tent usually works for about 50 guests. A 20 x 30 seats 48 people at 60 inch round tables or 72 at 8 foot tables, and a 20 x 40 frame tent seats 64 at rounds. Size up if you also want food, gift, and cake tables under the roof.
Do I need a tent for my backyard party?
You do not always need one, but a tent is the simplest backup plan for an outdoor party. It gives guests shade from the afternoon sun, keeps a light shower off the food, and gives you a place to hang lights after dark. For a kids’ party on a hot day, the shade alone makes a big difference.
How much yard space do I need for a 20×20 tent?
Plan on about 25 x 25 feet for a 20 x 20 high peak frame tent, and about 30 x 30 feet for a 20 x 20 high peak pole tent. The extra room is for the stakes or weights around the edge, so clear the area of furniture and debris before we arrive.
What if it rains?
Light rain is fine, because our tent vinyl is water resistant. Call us right away if you want to add sidewalls, and we will add them if they are available. If lightning starts, everyone needs to leave the tent and go indoors.
